Jakarta, 09 November 2023 – Holding Perkebunan Nusantara PTPN III (Persero) and PT PLN (Persero) held a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing aimed at increasing the provision of environmentally friendly electricity (Renewable Energy Certificate) for palm oil mills, as well as the utilization of new renewable energy. PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (Persero) Production and Development Director Mahmudi and PLN Retail and Commerce Director Edi Srimulyanti officially signed the agreement in Jakarta on Wednesday (08/11/2023). In his remarks, Mahmudi said that this MoU was an initial agreement for both parties to realize strong cooperation in providing electricity in PTPN Group’s palm oil mills, as well as increasing the use of new and renewable energy. “Until now, as many as 8 out of 68 Palm Oil Mills owned by PTPN Group have been installed by PLN with a range of 1,700 to 2,175 kVA, which is used as a source of electrical energy in the processing process,” Mahmudi said.
Mahmudi said, with PLN-ization as a source of electrical energy in palm oil mills (PKS), excess shells in the future can be cooperated with PLN as an alternative substitute for coal fuel. Through this collaboration, Mahmudi continued, PLN will support the reliability of PTPN Group’s factory electricity supply through a priority service program, in order to fulfill the smooth processing process.”With this collaboration, PLN will also issue a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) to support the Environmental, social, and Governance (ESG) program at PTPN Group,” he added.Meanwhile, Mahmudi also revealed that currently PTPN III (Persero) as the parent holding in the plantation and forestry cluster, has collaborated with partners in operating biogas and palm biomass power plants with a total capacity of 27MW.This energy is obtained from the utilization of new renewable energy sources based on POME and Empty Fruit Bunches from palm oil mills. “Therefore, the hope is that the existing power plants in PTPN Group can be registered as new renewable energy plants,” Mahmudi said.
Meanwhile, President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo, represented by Director of Retail and Commerce of PLN Edi Srimulyanti, said that the collaboration to provide clean electricity to PTPN Group is one of PLN’s efforts to accelerate the energy transition. This also supports the government’s target to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. “Now green energy is a necessity or obligation for all of us that we must start from now on.Of course, this is not because of the demands of our stakeholders, but rather how we prepare future generations to still be able to enjoy clean and green air,” Edi said.
Edi explained that PLN’s cooperation with PTPN III (Persero) includes providing electricity for palm oil mills, providing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to support PTPN III’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) program, and implementing knowledge sharing and capacity building in the use of new renewable energy. He is optimistic that the collaboration between PTPN III and PLN through the provision of green electricity will support the production of PTPN Group in the management of around 68 palm oil mills with a capacity of approximately 2,960 tons per hour. That way, the production capacity which currently reaches 2.8 million tons per year can increase at a more efficient cost. The MoU agreement between PTPN III (Persero) and PLN (Persero) marks an important step in efforts to encourage the use of renewable energy in the plantation industry, as well as collaboration to improve efficiency and sustainability in providing electricity for palm oil mills.
