Community Involvement & Rights
Local communities, including indigenous peoples, have rights that are recognized and protected by the laws of the Republic of Indonesia and international agreements. Therefore, the Company is committed to safeguarding the rights of local and indigenous peoples within the environment and context of PTPN’s operations and also improving the socioeconomic conditions of indigenous peoples in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 and International Labor Organization Convention No. 169. These human rights principles related to local community engagement form the foundation of PTPN’s Human Rights Policy, which is then translated into standards and procedures for the implementation of each related topic. In implementing this policy in the field, PTPN has currently undertaken several initiatives, among others:
- Establishing and implementing Human Rights Policy that governs the rights of local and indigenous peoples such as land rights, avoidance of relocation, and protection of culturally sensitive areas
- Implementing social impact analysis procedures to ensure that the Company’s operational actions have minimal impact on communities in and its surrounding environment
- Creating and implementing SOP for Stakeholder Communication and Consultation SOP that outlines the mechanism for handling complaints, suggestions, aspirations, both from internal and external stakeholders
- Committing to obtaining Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) before undertaking operational actions that may impact the rights of local and indigenous peoples
- Committing to not imprisoning human rights defenders or people who fight for human rights and not using paramilitaries to resolve conflicts
- The Company is also working together with third parties, such as Bumi Hijau Cemerlang and Bina Alam Lestari to analyze the potential & risk of human rights & indigenous peoples’ rights violations and ensure to make improvements & development to continue upholding human rights and indigenous peoples’ rights
- Every PTPN employee and supplier is also required to receive training on human rights which is regularly conducted with the purpose of raising awareness on human rights & indigenous peoples’ issues
- Although the Company has made every effort to avoid negative impacts on local communities, PTPN has established various channels for complaints as a form of responsibility in the event of unfavorable consequences
